Synopsis

To celebrate the Toronto International Film Festival’s 25th anniversary, the Festival invited ten distinguished Canadian filmmakers to create original short films. These Preludes received their world premiere prior to the Gala presentations at Roy Thomson Hall. Michael Jones’ Congratulations opened the Festival to rave reviews and was screened over 100 times – more than any other film in the history of the Festival.

“I am a dog filmmaker, I think. I’m not a director, really, I’m a shooter and cutter. I finally figured out that directing a shoot means getting out of the way so everyone else can do the job. (I like to use conventional narrative tricks so blatantly that the audience has to see the manipulation. It is my little attempt to expose the environment, whatever art there is in that.)

I like working with my brother and sister, they’re so funny. We have this need to exaggerate and we like doing it with a straight face. It is a menippean (dog philosopher) thing, I think, this exalting of the ridiculous while undermining the vainglorious. Perhaps it is Irish. Andy and Cathy are masters of it. ”
